DOVE HOUSE

Several Holy Cross parishioners volunteer at the Dove Recovery House for Women, located near the church at 14 N. Highland. The Dove House offers women—including women who are homeless, uninsured, and financially unable to pay for help—a supportive, homelike, and chemical-free environment in which they can live and develop new and healthy relationships with other women who are in recovery. The program is ideal for women who otherwise would have to return to unsupportive situations where they might encounter the use of drugs or alcohol or where it isn’t practical to live because of the damage to personal and family relationships.

Through Holy Cross’s collaboration with the Dove House, we seek to help ensure thatdove more women who are recovering from substance abuse will grow in a sense of community. Parishioners, as volunteers at the Dove House, are available as mentors and friends and have helped the women develop a computer lab and computer skills. The computer lab and the skills the women have learned continue to help them do things such as earn GEDs and find jobs and community resources. Parishioners also help connect the women to the various other resources they need, drive them to job interviews, and one volunteer facilitates a weekly Big Book session.

As Holy Cross members have become more involved in the Dove House ministry, they have become more aware of the women as valuable members of our community and more effective in responding to their needs and communicating positive messages about the Dove House to our neighbors. Ultimately, we believe that our partnership helps us grow in humility and gratitude and plays an important role in helping the women recover and reenter society successfully.
