Holy Cross Parish has served in prison ministry for several years to women incarcerated at the Indiana Women’s Prison, located near Holy Cross at 401 N. Randolph Street.
Our pastor, Father Larry Voelker, serves as a volunteer chaplain at the prison, offering Mass on Sunday afternoons. Women who wish to explore entering the Catholic Church may attend classes in the Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults (RCIA), and a few inmates each year enter the Church at Easter through this program. From September through May, volunteers from Holy Cross and elsewhere, led by parishioner Mary Margaret Gavaghan, offer a program of Bible study and faith sharing for twenty to thirty women on Tuesday evenings. Mary Margaret invites speakers on a variety of spiritual topics to these weekly gatherings that also include time for discussion and prayer. Mary Margaret also organizes an ice cream social on the grounds of the prison each June and a Christmas party in December.
A new ministry for Holy Cross is the formation of a care team to assist persons recently released from prison in returning to the community. Several parishioners are currently in training to provide this service.
